January 2011: This year remember to visit the Apishapa Valley Heritage Center to view (at this time of year by appointment only) the collection of photos & stories about the history of the area. This collection includes a section devoted to an early stagecoach stop at the Foster Hotel in the area once called Apishapa located east of the Town of Aguilar, the growth of this town because of coal mining in the surrounding hills and the fascinating stories of the Prohibition era the town is notoriously known for. We are fortunate to have a collection of photos donated by the Kelloff Family taken on Main Street when the town was at it's highest level of activity. Call 719-941-4678 to make appointments for individuals or groups. Upcoming events: In August of 2011 we received a grant from the State Historical Fund for an archaeological assessment at the Foster Statecoach/Hotel site along the Apishapa River. The field work was completed successfully by students from UCCS and Archaelogists, W. Arbogast and W. Tilley. Resulting data is being analyzed and a final report will be completed in the coming months and will be available for public viewing. We are hoping that this will be a first step toward further study about this historic site and the ultimate goal of stabalizing the remains of the hotel or perhaps interpretive signs about the site for group visits in the future. We will be working on the ongoing "Homestead Families" project in the coming months to add to last summers Booklet which featured 6 local families. This booklet is still availabe & we will have this years additions available by the summer opening of the Heritage Center located at 151 Main St. in Aguilar. This will also be available for Aguilar Fest Weekend July 21st of this year. Aguilar Fest - July 21, 2012: Watch this site or on Facebook/ Aguilar Fest for more details.
